    Canterbury, formerly a part of the town of Plainfield, became incorporated in 1703. It is approximately 40 square miles in area and has a population of 4,467 (1990 census). Canterbury's principal industries are dairy farming and small businesses. A typical New England country town located along the Quinebaug River, in the historic Quinebaug/Shetucket Valley corridor.
